Medical Council of India (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002 provides that every physician should as far as possible prescribe drugs with generic names. Further, the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) had issued Circulars in which all the Registered Medical Practitioners were directed to comply with the aforesaid provisions.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019 empowers Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) of NMC and the appropriate State Medical Councils to take disciplinary action against a doctor for violation of provisions of the aforesaid Regulations.
The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar stated this in a written reply in the LokSabha today.
