Press Information Bureau - TREATMENT FACILITIES FOR KIDNEY DISEASES - Feb 11

According to the study report “India: Health of the Nation's States”- The India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative in 2017 by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the proportion change in Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) number for Chronic Kidney Diseases is 0.8% in 1990 to 1.6% in 2016.

Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP) was launched in 2016 with the objective to provide free of cost dialysis services to all patients Below Poverty Line (BPL) at district hospitals in the country. Under PMNDP, State Governments are supported for providing dialysis services free of cost to the BPL patients under the umbrella of the National Health Mission (NHM). Financial support is based on the proposals received from the States/UTs as per their case load in their annual Programme Implementation Plans (PIPs).

PMNDP has been implemented in total 35 States/UT, in 569 Districts at 1045 centres by deploying 7129 hemodialysis machines. The details are provided in Annexure.

Treatment of Kidney diseases is also available under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY). Financial assistance is provided to poor patients belonging to families living below poverty line, suffering from major life-threatening diseases including Kidney diseases under Umbrella scheme of Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi and Health Minister’s Discretionary Grant (HMDG). Financial assistance upto a maximum of Rs. 1,25,000/- is provided under HMDG to defray a part of the treatment cost and the maximum financial assistance provided under the Umbrella Scheme of RAN is Rs. 15 lakhs. The quality generic medicines are made available at affordable prices to all, under Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) in collaboration with the State Governments.
